Villa di Moriolo
From Castle to Villa
Villa di Moriolo is an eighteenth-century villa located in the hills of San Miniato that rise on the ruins of an ancient medieval castle.
At Villa di Moriolo every detail has a story to tell. At Villa di Moriolo history left visible marks in its stones and bricks since 786, when it was just the tower of a military fort known as Castrum Moriori. Centuries passed by and after many transformations the Villa has been carefully restored providing that unique taste and mix of Tuscan history, landscape and lifestyle.
Villa di Moriolo is located inside a centuries-old castle that overlooks the hills of San Miniato, right in the hearth of Tuscany between Florence and Pisa.
During the Middle Ages, in the 14th century, it gained in importance due to the strategic position from which was possible to keep watch on the old route to Volterra. This gave birth to longtime fights and battles between the close town of San Miniato and the city of Pisa.
Finally, in 1318, after a long negotiation, San Miniato took the outpost of Moriolo and destroyed the castle, of which today we can still see the base of the main tower.
Probably the castle was soon substituted by a huge farm, and the property passed to the Grifoni family, as attested in the Carte dei Capitani di Parte Guelfa (1580-1595), the official Tuscan cartographic documents of the 16th century.
The building passed then in 1751 to the renown Florentine Pazzi family, who transformed it into a farmhouse, of which today we can see some capitals signed with the noble family name.
